KATHMANDU: The body of Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, who was among 10 climbers killed in the massive Broad Peak avalanche on July 30, has been recovered by a team of local volunteers from Shigar.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan confirmed that the remains, initially unidentified, were found by local volunteers searching the area on their own initiative and have since been identified as those of Sakhi.

According to mountaineer Naila Kiani, the body was first spotted by Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar, all from Tissar in Shigar. They alerted others in the area, and together with additional volunteers, carried the body down from above the advance base camp to base camp.

The Alpine Club said the names of the other volunteers involved in the recovery would be shared later.

Weather permitting, the body is expected to be transported by helicopter on Friday.

The club expressed gratitude to the local volunteers for carrying out the recovery operation without being asked, saying their efforts had given Sakhi's family an opportunity to say goodbye.

Sakhi was among the climbers caught in the massive avalanche that struck an international expedition on Broad Peak (8,047m) on July 30.

The avalanche claimed the lives of Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, Kili Pemba Sherpa, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindhu Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta”, American climber Mallory Geis, Chinese climber Wang Zhong, Sohail Sakhi and Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy.

The recovery of Sakhi's body leaves Nawang Thindhu Sherpa as the climber whose remains have not been recovered from the avalanche site, according to the information provided.

The latest recovery adds another chapter to the prolonged efforts to bring home those killed in one of the deadliest recent incidents involving an international climbing expedition on Broad Peak.
