KATHMANDU: Nepali mountain guide Chatur Tamang has achieved a rare mountaineering milestone by successfully summiting Mount Elbrus (5,642m)—Europe's highest peak—for the 200th time, marking a remarkable feat in Nepal's mountaineering history.

Tamang reached the summit at 6:20 am (Russia time) on Saturday, completing his long-standing goal after leading successive international expeditions. He had recorded his 198th ascent on July 22 and 199th on July 23 before achieving the landmark 200th summit.

To commemorate the achievement, Tamang unfurled the Nepali national flag atop Mount Elbrus, continuing his long-held tradition of promoting Nepal and its mountaineering heritage on the international stage.

Born in Solukhumbu, Tamang entered professional mountaineering in 1995 and has been based in Russia since 2002, from where he set his ambitious target of climbing Mount Elbrus 200 times.

He currently divides his time between Nepal and Russia, guiding Russian climbers on Himalayan expeditions in Nepal while leading international climbers on Mount Elbrus.

Besides Elbrus, Tamang has successfully climbed several major peaks, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Island Peak and Mera Peak. His latest achievement further underscores the global contribution of Nepali mountain guides to international mountaineering.
