KATHMANDU: Three Nepali mountaineers killed in the Broad Peak avalanche received their final tribute in Kathmandu after their mortal remains were brought back from Pakistan.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) paid tribute to Kilu Pemba Sherpa “Killu,” Gyalu Sherpa and Nima Sherpa by draping the NMA flag over their remains. NMA President Fur Gelje Sherpa and General Secretary Rajendra Bahadur Lama led the tribute.

NMA First Vice-President and lawmaker Mingma David Sherpa also paid final respects on behalf of the Government of Nepal by draping the national flag over the remains.

The three mountaineers were among the members of this season’s Broad Peak expedition. Their remains were brought to Kathmandu from Pakistan via Doha last Tuesday.

Ten mountaineers were swept away and killed when a massive avalanche struck Broad Peak on July 30.

The remains of mountaineer Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” had already been repatriated to Nepal and cremated, while those of renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja “Nims Dai” were taken to the United Kingdom.

The NMA expressed condolences to the bereaved families, friends, colleagues and the wider mountaineering community, saying the climbers’ courage, dedication and contributions to mountaineering would not be forgotten.
