Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel targets Dhaulagiri ski descent

KATHMANDU: Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel is preparing to attempt a ski descent from the summit of Mt Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest mountain at 8,167 metres, this autumn.

Bargiel has already completed ski descents from eight 8,000-metre peaks without supplemental oxygen, including Everest, K2, Nanga Parbat, Manaslu, Broad Peak, Shishapangma, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II.

His planned Dhaulagiri descent would add another 8,000-metre peak to his record of high-altitude ski descents.

The expedition will be locally managed by Seven Summit Treks, which has also handled Bargiel’s previous ski projects in Nepal and the region.

Bargiel, 38, completed a ski descent from the summit of Nanga Parbat to base camp without supplemental oxygen in June this year. He also made a summit-to-base-camp ski descent from Mt Everest without supplementary oxygen in September 2025.

He gained international recognition in 2018 after completing the first full ski descent of K2. In 2023, he became the first skier to complete descents of all four 8,000-metre peaks in the Karakoram.
