KATHMANDU: Sheikha Asma Al Thani, a record-setting Qatari athlete and member of the royal family, today scaled Gasherbrum II (8,035m), completing her 11th mountain over 8,000m, according to the expedition organizer.

Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, Chairman of 14 Peaks Expedition, said that the 36-year-old Al Thani stood atop the mountain along with record-holding mountaineer Lakpa Sherpa and others as the team found a favorable weather window.

“Under the leadership of Makalu Lakpa, the team scaled GII at around 5:05 a.m. local time,” Sherpa said. With this, Al Thani completed her 11th peak over 8,000m. “She will be attempting to scale Broad Peak in a couple of days.”

Al Thani will have to climb three peaks – Broad Peak, Cho Oyu, and Shisha Pangma – to complete all 14 peaks above 8,000m.

Other climbers who scaled GII this morning include Jose Carlos from Peru, Nadia Khoso from UK, Roman Andrade from Brazil, Tashi Shepra, Ngima Dorchi Sherpa, Dawa Sange Sherpa, Pasang Nurbu Sherpa, Pasang Tenje Sherpa, Lakpa Temba Sherpa, Mingma Tenji Sherpa, Pemba Chhiring Sherpa, and Fura Jangbu Sherpa, according to Tashi Lakpa. “Pasang Nurbu and Pasang Tenje scaled GII without using supplemental oxygen, while Lakpa Temba also completed all 14 peaks,” he said.
