Singaporean climber dies near Camp II in season’s second Manaslu death

KATHMANDU: A Singaporean climber died while climbing Mount Manaslu this morning, an expedition organiser said.
Pemba Sherpa, chairman of 8K Expeditions, said Lau Wee Seng, 50, from Singapore, died at around 6,000 metres while making acclimatisation rotations on Mount Manaslu.
“He felt uncomfortable while descending from Camp II and breathed his last while resting” Pemba said, quoting fellow climbers.
He was immediately assisted by other climbers, including a doctor from Asian Trekking, but could not be saved, Pemba added. “Initial reports indicate that the cause of his death could be the heart attack.”
This is the second death on Mount Manaslu, where more than 1,000 climbers, including 466 foreigners, are attempting to climb the world’s eighth-highest peak this autumn season.
Earlier, Tashi Sherpa, a 20-year-old local porter, died inside a tent at Base Camp.
“The family of Lau Wee Seng has been informed about his death, and a helicopter is being mobilised to airlift his body to Kathmandu,” Pemba said.
