KATHMANDU: Singaporean climber Sim Phei Sunn has become the first person from her country to summit both Gasherbrum II (8,035m) and Gasherbrum I (8,080m), according to Imagine Nepal Treks. She reached the summit of Gasherbrum II on July 21, followed by Gasherbrum I on August 1.
Sim was part of a five-member team that successfully summited both peaks together — first Gasherbrum II on July 21, and then Gasherbrum I on August 1.
Ukrainian climber Valentyn Sypavin, who also scaled Gasherbrum I on August 1, marked his seventh 8,000-meter summit of the year. He had previously summited Gasherbrum II with the same team on July 21.
Among the other team members, Aangdu Sherpa reached the summit of Gasherbrum I for the second time in his career, while Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa completed both Gasherbrum II (July 21) and Gasherbrum I (August 1). According to Imagine Nepal, Lhakpa Nuru had previously climbed K2 twice and Broad Peak once, making Gasherbrum I his fourth 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
