Kathmandu to see thundershowers; public urged to stay alert in high-risk zones

KATHMANDU: Nepal continues to remain under the strong influence of the monsoon system, with cloud cover and rainfall expected across much of the country.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon trough is presently positioned near its average location, sustaining active weather conditions nationwide.

As per Sunday morning’s forecast, most of the country will experience generally cloudy skies throughout the day. Moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in several hilly areas, particularly in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. There is also a chance of isolated heavy downpours in some of these regions.

Meanwhile, gusty winds may sweep across parts of the Terai, especially in Madhesh and Lumbini Provinces.

Nighttime weather is expected to follow a similar pattern, with continued cloudiness and scattered rainfall in hill areas. Heavier showers are likely in eastern and far western hilly districts, while other regions may receive light to moderate rain.

In the Kathmandu Valley, the weather will remain generally cloudy with rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature is forecast to range between 28°C and 30°C, while the nighttime minimum could drop to 21°C to 23°C. The chance of rain stands at 60 percent during the day and 70 percent at night.

Given the potential for heavy rainfall in elevated areas, the weather office has issued a 24-hour alert, urging the public, travelers, and concerned agencies to remain cautious.

Risks of flash floods, landslides, and road blockages remain high, and people are advised to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins.
