Nepal's first Olympian Nam Singh Thapa dies

KATHMANDU: Nam Singh Thapa, Nepal's pioneering Olympian and boxing trailblazer, has died at Heaven & Hope Hospital in Hong Kong following a battle with cancer.


Thapa made history as one of four boxers who became Nepal's first Olympic representatives at the 1964 Tokyo Games, marking a watershed moment for Nepali sports on the global stage.


"This is a tremendous loss for all sports enthusiasts," said Ram Awale, President of the Nepal Boxing Federation. "His dedication and passion for boxing will always be remembered."


The Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) described Thapa's contribution as "immeasurable," crediting his courage with opening doors for future generations of Nepali athletes.


"His remarkable journey will continue to inspire the nation," said NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha.


Thapa is survived by his wife, one son, and four daughters.

The Nepal Olympic Committee and Boxing Federation have extended condolences to his family and the sporting community.
