US hands over cargo drone to APF for flood relief operations

KATHMANDU: The United States has handed over a US-made Freefly Alta X Gen2 commercial cargo drone to the Armed Police Force, Nepal, to help deliver essential supplies to remote communities affected by floods.
The handover was attended by Scott Urbom, deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Kathmandu; Public Affairs Chief Mike Harker; Regional Security Officer Wil Vaughn; and representatives of the APF and Seven Summit Treks, the embassy said in a social media post.
The APF will use the drone to transport critical supplies to areas where difficult terrain has restricted access.
Seven Summit Treks had previously tested the drone on Ama Dablam during the embassy’s Ascent Summit programme. The drone successfully transported oxygen cylinders and mountaineering equipment between high camps in the Everest region under extreme conditions.
The embassy said the high-altitude test demonstrated a practical use of US technology in Nepal’s challenging terrain.
The drone handover is part of broader US support for Nepal’s flood response, which includes humanitarian, logistics, forensic, consular and other technical assistance.
