KATHMANDU: The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has completed the installation of three environmental waste management stations in Samsing, Thamo and Thameteng in the Khumbu region, replacing open dumping pits with a structured, community-led waste segregation and collection system.

The stations are managed by local women's groups — the Thamo Women's Group, Thameteng Women's Group and Phurte Women's Group — and were established with support from the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Foundation.

Tshering Sherpa, CEO of SPCC, said it will continue to provide financial and technical support to ensure the long-term sustainability of the stations.

The project aims to establish a closed-loop circular economy in the high-altitude region by collecting and transporting recyclable waste to Kathmandu rather than burning or burying it on site, he added.

Tshering described the project as a significant step forward for waste management in the Khumbu.

"This is a great initiative supported by the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa Foundation, and it reflects what is possible when communities, foundations and conservation organisations work together to protect the Himalayas for future generations," he said.
